Description

This medal was designed by Gen. Hugh Judson Kilpatrick. As one of the few officers serving in both the Eastern and Western Theaters of operation, Troopers under his command called themselves “Kilcavalry” (or “Kill-Cavalry”) because the General often used tactics in battle that were considered as a reckless disregard for lives of soldiers under his command. Kilpatrick was both praised for the victories he achieved, and despised by southerners whose homes and towns he devastated.

Kilpatrick received his first division command just prior to Gettysburg and, during Sherman’s 1864 march he was the only cavalry unit attached to the army, in effect functioning as an independent cavalry corps. In 1864 in preparation for this “March to the Sea” Sherman said of Kilpatrick, ” I know that Kilpartick is a hell of a damn fool, but I want just that sort of man to command my cavalry on this expedition.

This RECREATION is extremely rare, with an original selling recently for almost $4,000. It is a must for Re-enactors, students of the American Civil War, and medal collectors.

The medal or badge, which Kilpatrick is shown here wearing, measures about 2″ (37mm) wide x 2″ (37mm) long and consists of a spread wing eagle atop a swallowtail banner suspended from a short spear point staff. Across the top of the banner are three gold stars and a gold riband. Under the riband is a plain yellow swallowtail guidon on a staff. The medal is attached to the frock with a barrel safety clasp and comes packed in a clear plastic, foam lined presentation case.
